A pigeon sized owl that is a resident in
England, Scotland and Wales but is not found in Ireland. Often found
in deciduous and coniferous woods but will live anywhere there are large
stands of mature trees including parks and gardens. This owl is nocturnal
and is often heard calling at night. By day it roosts in trees such
as yew and holly or in trees covered by ivy as shown below. Its diet
consists of small mammals and rodents, small birds, frogs, fish, insects
and worms. The male utters the more familiar "hooo-hoo-hooo’
call whilst the female usually has a harsh "ke-wick' call. Juveniles
will move out of their parents territories in the autumn. |
