In the wild the Trumpeter swan lays 5-6 eggs. At Martinmere this spring only 2 were laid and sadly only one of them hatched successfully. The other was found to be sterile. For the first 2 days the cygnet hid under his mother for protection. But then he came out and showed his face.
These swans live in the arctic tundra where it is very cold. As a result the swans have very thick feathers to keep them warm and their cygnets grow very fast. The immature swan in the photo below is about 3 months old.
