Particularly likes feeding on rocks covered with seaweed searching for insects, crustaceans and molluscs. Many non breeding birds stay in the Uk through the year with birds from Greenland and Canaga arriving throughout August. Their appearance is striking in flight, with white patches on the back, wings and tail. Length: 22-24cm. The photos below show the bird in winter plumage. Their summer plumage is much more showy with a black-and-white head, chestnut back, white underparts and red legs.
