Upland Goose

(Chloephaga picta leucoptera)

Found exclusively on the Falkland Islands this is a very conspicuous bird which feeds in abundance on short grasslands throughout the islands. Taller grass is required for breeding. Males are distinguished by their white head and breast. The female can be confused with the rarer ruddy headed goose.

I was delighted to find this gorgeous male at Slimbridge WWT. I have to say that he is one of the most beautiful geese I have ever had the priveledge to photograph. (Feb 05)
