This shy and elusive bird is a widespread resident that is locally distributed. This bird which has a strange range of calls and grunts is more often heard than seen. It can be found in freshwater marshes and reedbeds where there is plenty of vegetation. The bird has an omniverous diet but feeds mainly on small fish, snails and insects. Populations increase during the winter as continental birds arrive. Length 23-28cm
