White backed Duck

(Thalassornis leuconotus leuconotus)

A diving duck from Southern Africa. It is thought to be closely related to the Whistling ducks. Sexes are alike and their habitat consists of lakes, ponds, swamps and marshes. The white back of this species is only visible when they fly, something which they are reported to almost never do. It feeds on a diet of water lily seeds, other aquatic vegetation and small insects. Size approx 40cms.
