This duck is commonly found in wildfowl collections around the UK. In the wild it has a large range. It can be found in north and eastern Africa and across in the West Indies and South America. It also lives in a wide range of habitats where fresh water can be found. Its diet consists of invertebrates such as aquatic insects, molluscs and crustaceans as well as aquatic plants, seeds and rice. It is a very social bird, found living in very large flocks.
