White winged duck

(Cairina scutulata)

Known locally in Assam as the Spirit Duck because of their haunting, eerie calls. It is a cavity tree nester and can now only be found in remote areas of peat swamp forest in the jungles of south-east Asia. The White-winged duck is very secretive and feeds mainly at night on seeds, grain, rice, snails and fish. This species is considered to be endangered.
