August 2005 and I was lucky enough to visit
the excellent feeding station at the WWT centre, Washington. Of all
the birds that visited the woodpeckers were the real highlights. There
were two adults and two juveniles and here are a selection of photos
showing some of their antics. By far the cheekiest and the most daring
were the two juveniles, recognised from the red on their heads. |

They took over the feeders and I even watched
them chase away the female bird. |

I even watched the juveniles on the ground
and foraging amongst the brambles, something you dont normally see the
adults doing. |

The male bird, recognised by the red patch
on the back of the head seemed to prefer feeding from the bird table. |

and the female, recognised bu the total
absence of red on the head seemed to prefer foraging in the bark where
the wardens had pasted suet and nuts. In the last photo she was photographed
visiting a pole that had holes drilled in it and those holes packed
with suet and nuts. Whilst wary she didnt seem to mind my presence close
by. |
