Winter Wren

(Troglodytes troglodytes)

I guess everyone the world over knows the wren. It is a bird that covers the globe in many different species. Both here in the UK and the US the winter wren is a very small, skulking bird known for belting out its rapid fire song and churring alarm call. Here it is a common and widespread, resident bird that lives on a diet made up mainly of insects. Because it is such a shy, small bird I have difficulties getting good photos. The winter months however make them bolder and they come closer in to the hide where I patiently wait....

The photo above was taken May 8th 2005. Whilst I sit hidden inside the bird hide waiting for the wrens to come in close this one decided to join me in the hide too. He had made a nest up in the eaves and he was busy putting the finishing touches to it.
