Common and widespread but locally scarce
in some areas. Found near farmland, heaths, bushy commons and small
plantations. In winter can also be found on arable fields. The male
is a very bright, striking canary yellow and can be seen atop bushes,
trees and wires in the breeding season belting out his distinctive "Little
bit of bread and no cheese" call. Its diet consists of seeds and
insects. Its population is in decline. |
