Easily confused with the Lesser black backed
gull this large sized species can be found in Europe, the Middle East
and North Africa. Its breeding range is centred around the Meditteranean
sea. Many birds remain in the same area all year round but others migrate
to spend the winter in mild areas of Western Europe or head south as
far as Senegal, the Gambia and the Red Sea. Like all gulls they are
great scavengers and can be found around rubbish tips and in fields
where they will take young plovers and lapwings. They are colonial breeders
preferring steep cliffs upon which to nest. The photo below shows a
second year bird in Ibiza August 2006.
